well, habit-wize i would say that they are BOTH bad for you. however, smoking in public is worse. why? b/c it affects those around you. i, for one, am allergic to smoke. so it would not sit well with me. it never does. now, an obese (not fat) person eating in public, although not healthy for them, is not killing anyone else. yes, it would be rude to say to put their food down, as opposed to a cigarette for the reason i gave above. i am speaking from my heart as i am and have been related to several with health, some including obesity, issues. i've watched some die b/c of health issues relating to it. and smoking. so there you are. life experience.
it isn't b/c we're friends. it isn't b/c of anything except that i give GOOD and HONEST answers. and i make him laugh when he needs it. THAT'S IT.

Both are bad habits, but look at where we are. The Land of the Free (unless your from somewhere else.) Our ancesters made it so Americans are free to make their own choices, and that includes people smoking in public. I hear about people complaining all the time about standing next to a smoker. If you don't want to stand next to them, then don't. And yes it would be rude for anyone to ask a large person to put their sandwich down. We don't have any right to do that because they have a right to eat whatever they want and there's nothing we can do about it. And it's just as rude to ask someone to put their cigarette out, because they have a right to smoke and to be out in public. And why did you mention a large person eating and people smoking, but not people drinking in public?

As a smoker i am aware of the hazards of smoking around other people - if you are outside seated at a cafe I would not smoke due to people eating - outside in general I would smoke. I suppose it comes back to the situation you are in.
I believe that you should mind your own business and stop looking at other people whether fat or skinny while they are eating - I suppose that you would not like anyone watching you or coming up and commenting that you should not be eating that. Mind your own business, buy the paper, read a book etc. I'm sure there are other things you can look at rather than judging someone else.
That was not an attack on you - but they are people to and they have the right to eat anywhere they would like.

Not related whatsoever. The reason for not smoking around other people is because it is dangerous to their health. The reason a fat person eats in public is because they're hungry just like anybody else. You're saying that if a family is out at the mall shopping for hours, and the fat person stops to have a break and some lunch...he/she should be deprived because you're judgmental and biased.

I think smoking is more disgusting. At least the fat person is only killing themselves. Smokers are taking upon themselves to cause harm to all of us including small children! That's DISGUSTING!
But so are overweight people, I mean I'm not being rude, I have overweight friends and they know how I feel, I just think people should care about the only body they get more often.
I do not appologize for my opinion!

the fat person can't hurt me (I have seen some women around me who make you wonder how they can walk, but they don't affect me). Yes, it would be rude to say to someone put your cheeseburger down. Smoking affects you negatively, so you have a lot more of a right to ask them to put a cigerette out.

smoking is not healthy whether in public or not, an over weight person, has the right to eat in public, why is that disgusting and why are you judging like that. Dimplomacy and tolerance is what we need in this society. Everyone has bad habbits, and none of us have the right to judge.

That's mean. Being fat is not disgusting. Sometimes, people can't help being fat. They might have some kind of disease that makes them fat. Smoking is different than being fat. You destroy yourselves and others when you smoke but you only destroy yourselves when you are fat. Don't discriminate.

Pianist makes a good point- But everyone doesn't have a disease!! If you could ban either one which would it be? Everyone skinny or non-polluted air? I would rather non-polluted air- fat ppl might gross you out but the air can kill you
