Jose Contreras is by far my coice for the best pitcher in the major leagues. He has gifted the White Sox with quite a winning streak of 15 games straight this season and hasn't lost since last year!

I would have to say Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks. While Webb is not a overpowering pitcher, nor does he rely on deceptive pitches to try to trick the batter, his key to success is his sinker. Though Webb's primary pitch is his sinker; he has also greatly benefitted this year by using his curveball and other off-speed pitches more often.
Typical of many ground ball-inducing pitchers, Webb's record last year reflected upon the Diamondback's mediocre infield defense. This year, Webb's sinker has led him to an 8-1 record. Through 104 innings pitched, Webb has an ERA of 2.06 and a WHIP of 1.07. Webb has produced the most ground ball outs out of any pitcher in baseball.
It is hard to argue against Brandon Webb's impressive early start. Though he may not be pitcher with the nastiest stuff (a la Johan Santana or Mariano Rivera), Webb's production and stats certainly do attest to his ability to get the job done.

Johan Santana. People go by wins too much. Its not Johans fault that people dont give him run support. He has a good ERA, a good WHIP, and a lot of Strike outs. He is a great pitcher. Contreras is good, but not great. There are about 10 pitchers that are better than him.

As of right now, I think Brandon Webb from the Arizona Diamondbacks is the best pitcher out there. He has the lowest ERA of all starting pitchers (2.06) and he is an ironman, pitching more innings than anyone in the majors (104.2). He has only walked 13 batters this season, amazing for how many innings he has pitched, and he has struck out 74 batters. Plus he has an 8-1 record to top it all off.
I don't know if he can keep this up the whole season, but as of right now, he is the best pitcher in the majors.
(All stats are accurate as of June 14th)

I was going to post this question last weekend because we were discussing this over breakfast. I guess the discussion ended with Brandon Webb of the Dbacks as our choice. Mike Mussina is not having a bad year either. Contreras is also a good choice, and Tim Wakefield's knuckeball is a killer.

Statistically, I couldn't tell you. But as far as heart and determination go, there's no one quite like Curt Schilling. What a determined man! With his constant note-taking and batter analyzing, it's hard to find anyone out there that determined to do their best. And, come on, he pitched in Game 2 of the 2004 World Series really injured and screwed his ankle up even more by doing so. There was a possibility that he could've permanently damaged his ankle. That's determination!

No doubt in my mind that Roy Halladay from Toronto is the best pitcher out there. He has great control and if he could just stay healthy he would no doubt win 20 a year.
