I think Chicago is the best "big city" in the United States (thinking of NYC, LA, DC, Atlanta, Dallas and Phoenix for comparison) for quality of life.

Transportation: The average commute time for a Chicagoan is still under 30 minutes. Also (particularly compared to the East coast), the drivers are relatively courteous as long as you don't do anything stupid. Public transportation is also excellent - the El is efficient, clean and remarkably safe.

Housing: As was mentioned previously, "gentrification" is the real estate buzzword in Chicago these days. This is bad news for renters, but good news for owners -- many neighborhoods that are beginning to gentrify are excellent investment opportunities as you can be fairly sure your home/condo will increase in value. My advice is to buy the most home you can afford in an "up & coming" neighborhood and plan on "flipping" it in 3-5 years.

Culture: Chicago has 100s of affordable, accessible and top quality musuems, galleries, historic sites and events - there is so much going on every weekend that your choices are overwhelming.

Sports: Football, baseball, hockey, basketball, soccer... we got it all.

Crime: Chicago is also a relatively safe city (esp. north of the Loop). On weekend evenings, the neighborhood sidewalks are full of people walking between restaurants, bars and nightclubs. I'm seldom approached by panhandlers and the ones I do encounter are relatively benign. In LA, you can't walk anywhere and, if you do, you don't feel safe -- for example, park near Santa Monica and you're taking the risk of being mugged or having your car broken into... you don't find that in Chicago.

Dining: There are a lot of expensive high-end restaurants but there are twice as many places for "cheap eats" with surprisingly good food. In particular, I don't think any other city in the U.S. offers as great a variety of different world cuisines at affordable prices as Chicago does.

Weather: Yes, it is cold in the winter... but not that cold. And, since we are on the Western side of the lake, we get relatively little snow. In the past two years, I've shoveled my driveway a total of 6 times. On the plus side, you experience 4 true seasons.

What's bad in Chicago? Two standouts: public schools & political corruption. Many city residents find themselves choosing between sending their children to private school (which can cost upwards of $20,000/year!) or moving to the suburbs. The Chicago political system (or "machine" if you prefer) is run on graft, patronage, and kickbacks. The Tribune is constantly exposing shocking schemes and although many politicians end their tenure in office with jail time, the next official appears to just pick up where their predecessor left off.

So "evil"? No, not at all. For a city this size, Chicago offers its citizens a wonderful quality of life. The citizens respond (generally) by treating their neighbors kindly and taking advantage of all the city has to offer.

i was born in chicago and i have to say no. not because i was born there, but because any city could be considered "evil". it's just chicago's history that makes people assume it's "evil".
