I really think you should talk to the doc about risks are involved in not taking prenatals. If you're very tuned in to nutrition and regularly eat a broad range of foods, including meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, your diet will provide almost all the nutrients you and your baby need. Realistically, though, most women — especially those in the throes of morning sickness — can benefit from taking a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement, preferably before they start trying to conceive. Think of it as an insurance policy to make sure you're getting the right amount of certain important nutrients during pregnancy.

And women with certain health issues, dietary restrictions, or pregnancy complications definitely need to take a prenatal vitamin. This includes vegetarians and vegans, women who are lactose-intolerant or have certain other food intolerances, smokers and women who abuse other substances, women who are having twins or higher multiples, and women with certain blood disorders and certain chronic diseases.
The single most important vitamin is Folic Acid. Maybe it would be a good idea to eat lots of spinach or other dark leafy greens.

If you eat well, the baby will be fine if you don't take the vitamins...but you won't! The baby becomes somewhat like a parasite (not to make the baby seem bad) but it will take all the nutrients it needs from what you eat and what your body currently has to be healthy. So you are risking your body, teeth and heading towards osteoporosis (poor bones) and much more. And if you are not a healthy eater, you child is at risk. Especially with folic acid, which is pertinent to you child having a healthy brain.

Just take the vitamins and be glad that they aren't shots. I am a type 1 diabetic...took 5 shots a day and my prenatals and my son has only been sick once in 2 1/2 years.

It is only 9 months out of your life.

You have to ask yourself why do you hate taking them? Because they make you sick to your stomach and you just vomit them up anyway? In that case, talk with your OB and see if he can prescribe one that will be easier on your stomach. If you don't like taking them because it's a hassle to remember them and they're large and cumbersome to swallow...well, that's selfish. You need to do what's best for your baby, and taking prenatal vitamins is good for your baby.

NOTE: Prenatal vitamins are specially formulated as they contain less amounts of certain vitamins (I think it's vitamin A and one or two others...can't remember. Just look at the label) than regular multi-vitamins. These vitamins, in large doses, can harm your baby. If you take your vitamins, make sure they're prenatal and not regular multi-vitamins.

Honestly, it doesnt matter what kind you take. I couldnt take the prescribed ones, they made me sick and im not paying $50 for something I can get for $10 over the counter. I take a generic over the counter brand, and I forget most times to take it. My little sister never took hers and my niece is healthy and beautiful. I make sure I eat a good diet with lots of fresh fruits and veggies, drink lots of water and milk. I also find that Ensure for Mom's helps give me the energy i lack sometimes. Its supposed to supplement the vitamin, but I make sure I drink that or a Yoplait Nourishe. Watch your sugar intake and stay away from soda's. If you eat a well balanced diet you can be ok. My OB nurse told me it doesnt even matter what kind you take. She would take a Flintstone's Vitamin with her daughter every morning instead of a prenatal.

I hated taking mine and my son is ok. If you don't like taking prenatals, try taking Flitstones Vitamens but make sure that they have folic acid in them. Take 2. This came from my doctor when I was pregnant.

I maybe took 2 in my whole pregnancy. They made me throw up so i didn't take them and yes my baby was born healthy and he still is. So i think really their is no need in them cause do you think they took anything like that back in the day? I think it won't hurt if you don't take them but i know others will disagree with me

I took mine up until I gave birth, but my doctor also told me that if I did not like them or if they were to big I could just take like the vitamins kids take with the little different cartoons. That's what I would do if you don't like them. good luck and congratulations

also in japan, docs donot prescribe prenatals or any vitamins, you are asked to drink milk(calcium),and green vegetables and fruits.make it a habit in your daily routine.so only try to take some folic acid if possible.
God bless you.

why do you hate taking them?? if they make you sick during the day, take them right before you go to bed.. that way you are asleep and not getting nauseated while they are working..

it's what i still have to do with regular vitamins
