I am suprised no one has given this answer yet but my opinion is because people like to feel smart. It's reassuring to one's own sense of intelligence to feel like they know the answer to something that someone else doesn't. It's an ego boost, a confidence enabler and just makes people proud of themselves.

I agree with most of the above reasons. AND aside from all the idiot perverts and juvenile pranksters using this forum - I think normal people are here to enjoy the social aspect of this. It's like hanging out in a college rec room and shooting the breeze about random topics. Sometimes the topics are interesting and cutting edge and other topics are just fun because they reflect common human experiences.

Best Answer - Chosen By You
To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take. The points table below summarizes the point values for different actions. While you can't use points to buy or redeem anything, they do allow everyone to recognize how active and helpful you've been. (And they give you another excuse to brag to your friends.)

I have fun. I also think it is a challange. I want my best answer percentage to be higher then my just answers percentage. Too bad I can't get people to vote for my answer in questions.
Right now I am at 17% best and 82% other. I wonder what the extra 1% is! LOL!

Well, I can not answer for everyone else but the reason that I answer the questions here is because I feel that my knowledge can help someone else out. That is why I only answer certain questions, not everyone that i come ascroos. Yours was an interesting question so I gave you my answer.

well i think people answer these questions for different reasons.
one of the major reasons might be coz people are bored and this is a harmless way to kill time. then there might be others who wud like to share their knowledge, help others and so on...

Basically we come to know about people and what's going on in this world to an extent. Answering for what u know is just our suggestions, like we have answers given by some big people in papers. sharing experience, thoughts, etc

It's my little way of reaching out and helping others. I try to answer seriously, from my heart, you know? You're probably looking for the answer "out of boredom" or something like that. Sorry I didn't give you the common answer. Good luck, hope you get the answers you're looking for. =)

I do it because I feel that my knowledge of a certain subject may be able to help someone in need. Especially those who are scared, worried, and/or hurting.
What about you?
Why are you answering questions here?
