I don't understand why so many people confuse the two. "Your" is possessive and "you're" is a contraction of "you are." Are they that hard to understand?

The reason is very simple. Non-native users of the language normally tend to spell by the sound rather than focus on punctuation and/or spelling. And with English being the global language that it has become, native users should be a bit more considerate, taking into consideration that they are in a state of being able to decipher what actually is meant to be conveyed by the non-natives.

Well, for one thing, they sound the same.

For another thing, there is ample evidence that the spelling of a word isn't represented in the mental knowledge that we have of that word in our minds. This makes sense if you think about it, because there are plenty of people who don't know how to read and write, but can still communicate with spoken language perfectly well.

Therefore, people who have trouble spelling these words just haven't fully connected up the part of their mind that knows the word and the other part of their mind that knows the spelling. And, frankly, spelling is a problem for just about everyone.

Oh how I wish I knew! I think I learned that in grade two. I distinctly remember going over There, Their, and They're in grade two. It's not that difficult! Yarrrrrrrrrrr, it's so horrible seeing them spelled wrong.

I have not seen such poor grammar and spelling since joining this site. It's a sad commentary of our educational system.

They're (There? Their?) too (To?) difficult for your (You're?) average idiot to (Too?) use correctly, I guess. Ha Ha.
