I wouldn't do it, as I don't drink, but if the kids were safe, the parents weren't driving, and they know that they don't get ugly when they drink, why would it be harmful?

Some adults drink too much sometimes. Lots of adults, actually. Especially on vacation. Kids can live with that, as long as they are properly cared for. (A designated caregiver?) :-)

It's the behavior while drinking that can be a problem, or chronic drinking. Alcoholism devastates families, but I don't think an occasional party does, as long as things don't get crazy.

Seriously, I think the overall stability and strength of the family is way more important than whether or not the parents go a little wild on a vacation.

You can drink during family vacation, as long as you find a babysitter for the children. The children shouldn't be put in danger in a strange new place, and if you plan to be drunk don't disturb your children. Don't ruin the next day either if you'll get sick from last night. I hope your friend girl is not under-aged either. If you were to have gone with them, I hope you wouldn't want to drink too much in that setting.

A LOT of people drink. If they're regularly smashed in front of the kids, problem. Once or twice a year wile on vacation? Not a big deal. You don;t know what the kids were doing or where they were while this was going on, they might've been watching movies or something. You jump to conclusions are you could REALLY piss someone off.

I think it is a great example for intelligent kids but a poor example for not-so-intelligent kids. An intelligent kid is going to see the erratic behavior of the adults and say, "I don't want people to ever see me like that. That is so embarrassing." A not-so-intelligent kid will want to emulate the actions thinking that the behavior is cool and normal.

I agree that it is very inappropriate. There is a time and place for that, but not around kids.
