The two theories are that it was named for Mario Mendoza or Minnie Mendoza.

Mario Mendoza batted between .180 and .220 for five consecutive years, and is probably the more credible theory.

Minnie Mendoza had 16 career at bats and 3 hits, a .188 average. It seems unlikely that such a marginal player would have such a well known term named for him.

By the way, in an interesting turn of events, Mario Mendoza ended up being a fairly successful hitting coach.

Mendoza line came from Mario Mendoza who embarrasingly hit from .180 to .202 for several years. When you hit above .200 you are hitting about the Mendoza line and i really really hope you can hit above it.

It was named after Mario Mendoza who had a real bad batting avg. Go to MLB.com to search his stats. He was so bad when he tried to spank his kids he swung and missed at them too!

it was named after mario, who was a great defender and im sure would like to know, considering there have been many other weak hitting glove men what he did to get singled out.
