Well you need Nirvana because they made the alternative scene. Throw in some Foo Fighters (obvious direct influence) and Offspring would be good even though they were more of a grunge/punk kind of band. Bush is a nice one because they really had a feel that was all their own in the genre of alternative. You've gotta have Beck... I mean come on you can't think alternative and 90s without "I'm a loser baby. So why don't you kill me? Gettin' crazy with the cheese wiz."
Honestly, this is a question I have asked myself and in truth it changed from year to year. There never was a true alternative because it faded into punk or grunge or pop. Whatever scene was closest to the bands. Eventually, alternative turned into the pop crap that is on the airwaves nowadays.
