If you're going to be there for an extended time, look into a rail pass. Be prepared to sometimes pay for reservation costs. Its well worth the money though. The price of the passes depends on how long you'll be there and where you're going.

For intercity transportation, there's usually the metro, which is the best method to get around, I believe. Buses are a little more difficult.

Well, if you're going to London, or any other busy cities then I would advise on getting some form of subway pass. It might be a little disgusting and crowded, but it's definitely better than walking on the streets. Lots of the more crowded cities are very, VERY smokey. (If you don't smoke and don't live in a smokey community, prepare to have your lungs hurting after the first day. But, thankfully, you get used to it after about a day or two.)

If you're going to other places though, I agree with the above. Definitely invest in a railpass.

if you see "wc" this is the bathroom. always carry euro change b/c you have to pay to use the toilet. customary is 50 euro cents. maybe take a translator with you...not a person but one of those that look like a calculator. they come in handy.
