...Macromedia image-editing software on his home computer (the lucky duck!), which accepts ordinary JPEG files. Will it also accept The Gimp's version of this format? (N.B.: Please ignore the question mark at the end of the intro to this question, as it [the question mark] occurs partway through a run-on sentence, and therefore patently doesn't belong there.).

Yes it will. But Be careful when your save in Macromedia PNG format. Because when you open in Gimp it might not do the PNG conversion properly. Your layers will all be messed up.
