Sorry, guys. English is NOT the official language of the United States as a country. The US does not HAVE an official language. Of the 50 states, only 28 have declared English as an official language. Of those 28, Louisiana and Hawaii have declared other languages, French and Hawaiian respectively, as co-official languages along with English. Furthermore, on many Native American reservations, the various tribal languages are either official or co-official with English.

EDIT: My own state, Utah, declared English the official state language, after a state-wide vote, in 2000.
Also: Currently, the United States federal government specifies no official language, but there are official languages in these states:

English alone:
Alabama (1990)
Arkansas (1987)
California (1986)
Colorado (1988)
Florida (1988)
Georgia (1996)
Illinois (1969)
Indiana (1984)
Iowa (2002)
Kentucky (1984)
Massachusetts (1975)
Mississippi (1987)
Missouri (1998)
Montana (1995)
Nebraska (1920)
New Hampshire (1995)
North Carolina (1987)
North Dakota (1987)
South Carolina (1987)
South Dakota (1995)
Tennessee (1984)
Utah (2000)
Virginia (1996)
West Virginia (2005)
Wyoming (1996)
English and Hawaiian:
Hawaii (1978)
English and French:
Louisiana
English and Spanish:
New Mexico
"English Plus" resolutions:
New Mexico (1989)
Oregon (1989)
Rhode Island (1992)
Washington (1989)
None:
In addition to the states not otherwise mentioned:
Alaska's 1998 Official English amendment was overturned by the Alaska State Supreme Court in 2002.
Arizona's 1988 Official English amendment was overturned by the Arizona State Supreme Court in April, 1998.
Also, English and Spanish are official in Puerto Rico. English and Chamorro are the official languages of Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands

As others have said here, the U.S. federal government has not declared an official language. That's one of the hot topics of debate for the immigration bill that has recently had hearings in Congress on.

Hawaii has declared Hawaiian as "one" of their official languages, with English of course being the other.

A couple peeps below also have links to Wikipedia which lays out the structure by state.

I don't think states have the rights to declare an official language. If they did, another civil war would break out.

Now, what if the baby's figure would not talk any of those languages, the position is the cushion for them. also, it facilitates the mum and father that do not understand English the opt to no longer to study it because they retain in mind that they are going to have it translated for them. i replaced into required to ascertain an essay for my Ap English class. Bilingualism in u . s . a .: English should be the purely Language through S.I. Hayakawa. and it truly is the issue. He provides examples in the course of the textual content explaining it. Please examine it. i'm no longer affirming you won't be able to talk your interior of sight language because thats what makes u . s . a . unique yet I mean it will be more desirable suitable if all of us spoke English. I mean, like someone suggested till now, you won't be able to bypass France and get mad that they talk French and choose them to regulate each thing because you do not talk the language. Likewise with u . s . a .. only about all of us speaks English and yet another language yet people that do not talk English won't be able to come the following counting on their interior of sight language and through us no longer organising an reliable language because they received't opt to.

Well... if you go to Miami, Florida... you'd swear the official language was Cuban, and if you got to the southern part of Texas... forget about it. You might as well be in Mexico with a translation book!
