I lived in Taiwan for two years. I lived in Danshui (Taibei county), in Taibei city (near Taibei university), Guishan (in Taoyuan county), Zhonghe (Taibei county) and in Sanxia (Taibei county, near Tucheng).
I had a great time in all of these places, but I think that my favorite was Danshui. It is on the north west coast of the island, and there was so much to see. (Plus, Ye Mama took good care of us at her resturant - sometimes we could not go past it with out her giving us free food!)
I have not been there for two years or so, but I would love the chance to go back and see all my friends.
One thing that at first surprised me was the garbage trucks. When I first heard one, I thought it was an ice cream truck, then I see all these people running out with their day's garbage to catch the truck! What memories!

Yes, I have been to Taiwan, and it is a nice place. I went to Taipei and was amazed at how many shops and restaurants were crammed into the smallest areas. I also couldn't believe how many people rode those motor scooters. It definitely made me want to get one someday :-).
I hope that you can go back some day soon. The food was great and I visited some moutainous region where they were selling fresh honey straight from the honeycomb. Yummy!
What did you think about squatting to use their restrooms? and having to pay to use some stores' restrooms?
Take Care!

I don't know how to answer again without editing my original answer. Anyway:
I was there for only 3 months, so I didn't get to see or experience everything I wanted to. No, I am not sure what the MRT is. I did go to the southern region where they had a fresh fish market. They had this one fish (maybe a tuna fish) that was huge. I had never seen a fish that big before. Also, they had hundreds of people all flying kites in a large field. It was a beautiful sight. It was so windy there by the shore and they were all capitalizing on it.
The next place I would love to visit now is China :-)
May God bless you too, through His Son, Jesus Christ.

I lived 4 years in Taiwan, it became a second home for me, but I'm happy that i went back to Holland 1 week ago.
Yes it is crazy with the scooters and specially the way they drive.....!!!! I'm happy I'm still alive. Your lucky you didn't see any accidents, but i can tell you there are lots every day. A couple of times i saw them lying on the ground, covered with blood and 2 times they were dead. This is pretty shocking when it happens in front of your eyes. Taiwan has a extremely high dead rate in the traffic.
Taiwanese are great and cool people as long they don't drive.
Personally i think Taiwan is a nice spot to visit if you have to be here or you are making a stopover, but I should not advice it for a holiday or traveling spot and specially not if you are searching for relaxation.
I can't agree about the restroom story. In those 4 years i NEVER had to pay to use the restroom, beside that they have so many public places where you can go: Gas stations, some 7-11's, department stores, etc.
9 of the 10 places you go they have a western toilet beside a squat toilet, unless you go to the countryside. I wish the toilets where as good and clean in Europe!!

I'm from Taipei, Taiwan. I mean my parents. I visit there every summer. And I'm going tommorrow. See ya!!! Well, it's small, so everything is crammed. And there is SO many scooters. And stuff. It's fun overall though. It's really hot in the summer too. And everything is convinient too. VERY good food, but expensive, only rich people can afford. Well, contact me if you want more details. I have SO many memories that are personal, though. But yeah. Hope that helps!

Yes, I lived there for several years, teaching English and studying Mandarin Chinese. It was a lot of fun, but I had a hard time with the crowds and chaotic traffic. You might want to look at the sites below for more information about Taipei:

If you have Asian face, esp Chinese's look but actually u r not Taiwanese then u will have different opinion. The people here will think u r local n start to speak their language. Chinese is fine, but Hokkian?? oops...trouble! ^o^
Taipei is crowded but I like it. Better than other places in Taiwan, more high tech but things r much more expensive than other cities.

Yes and it is quite fun visiting places in the countryside. Much more scenic than the cities. And the people are ingeneous in fabricating things to suit their needs! Can see these in the outlying places.

Yes recently. I think Taiwan is ok, big streets and not so crowded. I prefer Hong Kong ... it's much more alive.
