I agree with your basic premise, but I want to limit your opinion a little bit. Not all conservative people want to impose those bans in the US. Many, many conservative people just want the government to leave them alone- they want less regulation. These people are what are thought of as classical conservatives.
The new conservatives (the religious right) are the ones that want to regulate morality in this way. I disagree with it entirely. People should be able to do as they please. Women should be able to control their own bodies and gay people should be able to have the same rights in marriage as anyone else.

Conservatives, just like liberals, do not agree on everything. So there is a wide range of conservatives who do believe different things. I think most conservatives believe that certain standards should be set for all because without them, there is an "everything goes" policy. I don't think we really want this in society. I mean, think about it. We must have some sort of standards, or we become like animals. I mean, why do you want abortion limited? That's because you have a somewhat high standard set for the unborn. Why is murder illegal in our country? Because we have high standards regarding protection of human life. If we allow our government to redefine what marriage is, and allow homosexual people to marry, than why not polygamists, and why not just allow 12 year olds to marry if they want to? Why not have groups of 50 people marry each other? What good then would marriage even be? We have to set standards in society, and they should be high, or else we reverse the evolution pattern and become more like animals - that's just my opinion.

So you are saying that gays will never divorce? Everybody(well most everybody) get married because they love each other. The divorced ones only thought they loved each other. True love will stand the test of time.
Conservatives have been living and putting up with Liberals standards too.
ie. Taking prayer out of schools.
Arresting people for using the word God in school.
Taking Christmas away from children and changing it to a more liberal and politically correct Winter Holiday
because we don't want to offend any body.
Push your rhetoric somewhere else.

Why do liberals think that "tolerance" translates into "let me do what I want because I want to do it?"
Sometimes the best way to preserve freedom for all is to have a few boundaries and limits. (for example... marriage! It's supposed to create a foundation for social relationships! And family, from sociology study provides the base for a STABLE society... )
People that wear saftey belts still die in car accidents- the divorce rate is not an accurate indicator that marriage is not working. Marriages don't work because people don't make them work.

There are conservatives and there are conservatives. Some focus on values and some focus on fiscal restraint. At present the values wing of the conservative movement is getting the public's attention. I think we can blame the sound bite mentality of the media-consumer complex. As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and he is us." It is easier to attack "corrupt" social values than it is to tackle real social/economic/environmental problems, such as children living in poverty; the rising cost of college education and healthcare; deficit spending; trade imbalance, global warming, etc. So why deal with the really serious problems when you can blame the shiftless poor, the misfits, the liberals, the abortionists, the immigrants, and the wicked homosexuals for causing the problems?

i completely agree with you if they don't want to participate in abortion or gay marriage they don't have to but they should let people decide for themselves. most of them think they are being Christians and god doesn't want those kind of things and he may not but from what i know about the christian religion god is all about us being able to make our own choices.

Actually the divorce rate is based on many factors and is not really 50%.

NOT ALL of them--just most of them. And it's because they are self-righteous, holier-than-thou, arrogant, ignorant imbeciles! And you are so right--it's almost inherent in them to tell others how to live their lives, thereby slowly denying ALL of our freedoms! Neo-Cons are dangerously close to Fascists, and I can't wait to see them lose their a**es in the Nov., '06 elections, not to mention the '08 election!!!
