Maria is a great name. It has ties to Spain, Most Hispanic countries and Italy. I have known many Maria's. I can only think of two that were Hispanic, some were Italian and one I think was Greek. But it does not matter,If you like Maria, use it. What difference does it make, Why does it matter if the name seems Anglo or any race this is a very global world. Besides have you seen some of the names out there, they name kids after anything. I knew a man named Lyon Trainer and a girl named Candy Kane, and even those are nothing compared to Ripcord, Axle, Dolphin and some even more unusual names. Maria sounds just fine to me, at least it is melodious.

Maria is cool. I'll bet your daughter will thank you for giving her that name. It's unique. It's a diversion from the oh-so-boring American names. Besides, it means "Mary" in English, right? What could be cooler than naming your baby after the Blessed Mother?

I think you should name your daughter whatever you want. I like the name Maria, but if you are finding that you are uncomfortable with people making comments about it, maybe you could use it as a middle name

Your friends are crazy. Maria is a popular name in many cultures.
By the way most "Spanish" people are white.

Marie (pronounced Maria) is a German name. Think the nanny in The Sound of Music. They are all variations of Mary, so the ties are more religious than ethnic.

ive met plenty blonds naming maria and didnt give second thought to their race. dont worry about it. ppl who laugh will either be racist or are just joking. If you're so conscious about it that you dont want to name her that anymor, try a more anglo name but close to maria( such as mary)

I love it!
When I was working at a job that called people in a Mexican border state to update demographics, I spoke with a young Hispanic gentleman (real neat guy) named Gavino. I love that name, too. I kept my Italian (maiden name) last name as a middle name when I got married, and if I ever have a son, his name will be Gavino--my maiden name--my husband's last name.

i think it is a sad world that the only thing that people are worried about is what other people think about naming a child...good grief...nations are straving and killing each other and here we are, debating over a name...maria..marie...mary...they all the same...named after the mother of Christ....what more could you ask for in a name..and whoever has it should be blessed....
