It sounds like there is a lose connection between the hard drive and the motherboard. Check your ribbon cable. If that is not it maybe do a chkdsk/f to check for any errors the drive may have.

If there are no floppy drives, Cd's, bootable DVDs, etc. Then it sounds like the Hard drive is about to fail. The boot sector of the hard drive is not being read each time you turn it on. That indicates imminent hard disk failure. If you have a way to backup the entire system, DO IT NOW. Then get ready to buy and install a hard drive.
ALSO: There are some viruses out there that will give the same symptoms. Always run the latest greatest virus scan FIRST, before scrapping the hardware. ALSO: If no virus is detected, run a hard disk utility program to see what sectors could be failing, but at this point, do the backup first.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I'm interpreting the question as follows:
I am periodically getting an "Operating System not found, please insert system disk" error message.
What it means is that the Disk and the boot loader are not talking to each other.
Could be any number of things:
1. Failing hard drive: These are early warning signs if this just started happening. Starting backing up frequently.
2. Failing or Faulty IDE card: if this has been happening. Generally turning off the computer, letting it sit, then turning the computer on again. Get a new IDE card. If you're IDE controller is on the motherboad, get a new IDE card and disable the motherboard IDE Controller.
3. Some new hardware or sofware is messing up your system. Uninstall whatever it is.

Maybe the hard drive is beginning to fail, could be a faulty power supply, or a corrupt boot sector. Have a local tech trouble shoot the pc.

simple, just reboot/ press delete/ or f1/ for your bios setup and select boot from harddrive 0 , and disable other boot devices, also you might want to get to a dos prompt and type scndsk /r
