If your computer was faster in the begining (when you first installed XP or when you brought it) and now it has slowed down then it may be due to bad entries in your registry. Each and every program you install makes a lot of registry entries. When you uninstall a program, many does not remove all the entries they put in. Due to this your registry may contain a lot of unwanted entries. Since the registry is the central database of windows, a bad registry can make the machine slow.

The best way is to buy a registry cleaning / defragmenting product. I would recommend VCOM System Suite 6 or VCOM Fix-it Utilities 6. Use the registry clean tool and the registry defragment tool. It will help a lot.

go to "start"
Then "control panel"
once "control panel" opens, double click "system" icon.
"system" screen will open.
click on the "advanced" tab at the top.
In the 'performance' section click on 'settings'.
