The Web (or the Internet) is millions of individual documents known as "Web pages." Every Web page can contain text, pictures, graphics, animations, video, sounds, and hypertext links to other Web pages. A Hypertext link permits a user to move from one Web page to another, regardless of whether a page is stored on the same server or on a server across the world. Web pages are accessed and viewed (also called "surfing the Internet") through software called a Web browser. Currently the three most popular Web browsers are Internet Explorer, Fire Fox and Netscape Navigator. Web pages are maintained at a Web site, which is a computer acting as a server that supports the Web's HTTP protocol. When accessing a Web site, a user is first linked to a site's home page, generally an HTML (hyper-text mark-up language) document that functions as an index, or springboard, to the rest of a site's contents. A global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. Unlike online services, which are centrally controlled, the Internet is decentralized by design. Each Internet computer, called a host, is independent. Its operators can choose which Internet services to use and which local services to make available to the global Internet community. Remarkably, this anarchy by design works exceedingly well.

The internet is, put simply, a thing that connects every computer in the world together. It started out as a network and was designed to allow everyone to quickly access data and programs off of any site.
