index.dat files are located on all windows at
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat file
They record everywhere you go on the internet. As time passes, the files(there are 6) just keep on growing. Making it possible for MicroSoft, and any hacker to track everything you type, and every site you visit.

Rather than download a program to do it, do this:
1. Boot up the pc in safe mode by hitting the F8 key as it starts up.
2. Pick the safe mode with the command prompt.
3. type in: CD \ (and hit enter).
4. From that prompt, type in the following exactly as is shown here: DEL /S INDEX.DAT (and hit enter). (To repeat and show the correct spacing, it's: DEL(space)/S(space)INDEX.DAT)
This will progressively go through your entire C: drive and delete all the index.dat files on your C: drive.
Once that's done, exit out of safe mode and reboot the computer. Windows will re-make all the needed index.dat files, but they'll be new, showing nothing from the past ones. Good luck.
