because if you got in his way, he would just intimidate you until you made a mistake and wrecked.

The reason for Dale Sr's nickname was because of the way he intimidated other drivers on the track. However his original nickname was "Ironhead". If you want to understand the legend that is Dale Sr I recommend that you rent "3", it was an ESPN movie that was done about Dale Sr. The special features on the DVD show Dale Sr.

Dale Earnhardt has the best eye to hand coordination of any driver in history. He used this "gift" to become the greatest race car driver and earned the nickname "Intimidator" by using this eye to hand coordination to enable him to ride the bumper of the car in front of him until he passed the car. Being fearless was also a part of the "Intimidator's" mixture.

Earnhardt did something in his time that would not be allowed in todays NASCAR world,,to run over people on the track,,if he could get by you he would run through you,,crash you out of the race to win,,,thus the name "Intimidator",,,not everyone like him,, they respected him,,but didn't all like him,,was not a fans favorite till he died,,,Elliott received the fans favorite 16 times,,Dale Sr did not receive that title untill Bill Elliott told the fans to vote for him after he died,,,yes he won 7 titles,,so did Richard Petty,,in the (good ole days) days they also raced on dirt along with paved tracks, and they raced more races in a year,,he was know for the dark glasse's,mustach,,did not smile much,,part of his style also! did not care for his style of racing,,pushing and banging some one out of his way to win!! surprised he never hurt anyone seriously with his style of "racing"

It's not just that he intimidated you if you got in his way, it's HOW he intimidated you. If you didn't move over he would simply punt you out of the way. He was great but he was one of the dirtiest drivers of his time. Ask DW or Terry Labonte or anyone else running ten or fifteen years ago. His death gave him martyr status but he wasn't universally loved as a driver.

Becuase when racers saw that black #3 car in there rear view mirror, they knew something was gonna happen, they knew Dale Earnhardt was gonna get by them one way or another. And that my friends was very intimidating especially to a rookie!

That is easy he intimadated! Big clue I N T I M I D A T O R get it?
Try finding an old video of him in a race. He was a very talented driver that had that special knack of knowing how to drive plus being able to read other drivers and knew exactly their weakness and exactly how to be THE INTIMIDATOR...

I believe it was because he was willing to do whatever it took to win.if a driver saw that #3 coming up behind them they knew it was time to pee or get off the pot.Earnhart never had a problem putting the bumper to anyone he called it rattlin their cage.I have seen him put the bumper to many different drivers usually on the last lap to make the winning pass.hey it is what it is.I think it was a well earned knickname and probably applied for most of his competion

He got that name from his driving style. I heard Rusty Wallace say one time that when he looked in his rear view that if he saw the no. 3 car, he knew that Dale would do what it took to get by him.
