Your choice, i have had mine for 11 years, it's fine, i like it. if you want to, then do it. it does hurt, not excessively, but it does hurt. swelling can last for up to 3 weeks, maybe more on some people. good luck with your decision. it is also common place these days, so you won't lose a job over it, or get looked at like you are a freak. be warned, however, it took me 1 year to get used to it. you can chip your teeth and if the ring comes loose, you can swallow it, you would simply poop (not to be gross) it out. also, it took me forever to be able to eat Ramon noodles normally, it would wrap along the bar.....that was humorous. again, good luck

Most people who get anything pierced, say, "I am doing it to be a unique individual," when the real truth is "I am doing it cuz lots of other people are doing it." Are u a follower or leader?
Even if there were only one chance in a million that u could get an infection (and it IS possible), would that be a risk u R willing to take? The biggest mistake a person can make is to get the piercing done by someone who does it without having totally sterile, sanitary conditions (like is there an "autoclave" that sterilizes the instruments and jewelry?).
The bottom line is that any question with "should" in it requires a value judgment--what is the right and wrong thing to do? And that means the answer is a matter of opinion. There is no possible factual answer to the question of tongue piercing.

The choice is yours at the end of the day, you'll do what you want no matter what advised (something we tend to do ;) )
I have mine done and got no defects or had no problems with it. Quite a few in my family has had done and I learned a lot by the observing between the different family members. My ex got his done after I did, he has a fat tongue. My older daughter got hers done, she has a thin tongue like me (long and thin, or short and fat) the two different types of tongue.
With my daughter and I, neither have a speech impediment and had no problems but my younger daughter and ex who both have fat tongues has difficulty with their speech. My ex removed his, my younger daughter only recently got it done.
Once had it done, you are prone to a throat infection (new object causes plus the wound itself) but with cleansing etc it is ok, just be prepared for 6 days of BS while it heals.. once changed into the regular size is ok to eat etc, painful until then.
Now then, my daughter went to the doctors because she got tonsilitis, and the doctor told me that the tongue piercing can cause tongue cancer after about 20 years.
Just take this into consideration BEFORE getting your tongue pierced.
I had never heard of this before but I got it from the doctors mouth so gotta hold truth in it.

Like I said, choice is yours but be aware of the risks. And if got a fat tongue more chance of a speech impediment unless intensive tongue training changes this, only others opinions with the fatter tongue can clarify if a impediment is picked up by the difference in the tongues size i.e. fat or thin

if you are prepared to do it, then no problem, just make sure you take the after care seriously as you don't want to have an infection on your tongue, also be careful when eating, i chipped my tooth twice on the same tooth and have to have a cap put on the hole it made in my tooth. I love having it though it good if you really want it!

Don't let others decide for you. If it is something you want to do, then do it, just take care of it, so there isn't a problem. Personally though if I was going to pierce anything other than my ears, I would do my eyebrow.
