I am almost 20 years old, and have not been to the gyno yet. I am terrified to go. I have'nt done anything in past to make me worry about STD's or anything, but I am afraid of cancer, or something else coming up wrong with me. I don't know what to do. Is the procedure really scary? Thanks a lot!

Yes, I have had sex, I was just stating that I've been with one person, so therefore I am not worried about STD's, and yes cancer has ran in my family.

I was in the same boat as you last yr. Xcept i was only a little younger.
I was concerned about a lot of things too. But i finally got myself to make the appt. madesure a was thoroughly cleansed that day..and went.
Before the doc did it i spoke 2her about how worried iwas and i actually cried bcos i was so worried.
She pulled out the instruments and explained the procedure to me.
All it is, is a little tool that get put up you know where..pumped a few times to open up to the cervix..and then a little brush that looks like a mini baby bottle cleaner is used to take a sample.
That bit is the most uncomfortable.
Its a HUGE relief once its over.

The procedure can be scary your first time. Find a gyno you are comfortable with. You can even take a friend or parent for moral support Whomever you choose, if anyone, can stay at the top of you so they cannot see anything. Although you probably do not have to worry about cancer unless you have a long family history of cancer. For your piece of mind get it done.

Honey it is not that bad. All the doctor is going to do is take a family history. Do a vaginale exam this is the stcky part the doc will stick a speculum inside of the vagina to open it up it leaves a clear view of the cervix. they will take a large looking Q tip and take a sample from the inside and cervix put it on a clear slide and send it to the lab. then the doc will insert his fingers inside of you and feel your abdomen at the same time to feel for abnormalities in your uterus, tubes, and ovaries. If they are enlarged that would be a cause for concer. the last would be a breast exam which you should be doing monthly after every period. This all sounds like alot but it reality it only takes about 10 mintues for the whole procedure. Get it done

Going to the Gyno can be a scary thing. A strange man shoving some cold instrument up your most private possesions?

Try look for a Gyno who is sympathetic. I prefer men for that reason. women tend to be know-it-alls when it comes to female problems, and can be a bit snobby in that way.

The actual examination takes about 2 minutes. If you have found a good one, he will give you some privacy while you remove your lower clothing and undderwear, and get onto the table. I have always liked to have a sheet to cover me, to give me more of a feeling of privacy. He will insert his fingers gently into the vagina to feel around - he will most likely lubricate them first. He will also use an instrument to hold it open. It is not painful, but rather cold, and can cause a bit of pressure in the vagina. You should let him/her know if you experience any pain, and he/she will lubricate more.

My mom always used to say that her gyno had a sign at the front door to his office: "please deposit all valuables and dignity with the nurse" but I feel that if you find a good gyno, you can go with your dignity intact!
good luck!

It totally seems much scarier than it actually is! First of all, its really quick. Second, you can tell the doctor that you're scared and she'll understand and walk you through it. And no, it doesn't hurt, it's just uncomfortable (but you go to the dentist right? the dentist is a thousand times worse).

You never know what might be wrong with you if dont have it checked out. I think if you go, you'll realize that there was nothing to be afraid of. Good luck!

It can be scary the first time around, but once you get in the doctors office and the explai everything, you kind of loosen up. It will take about less than 5 minutes for the whole thing to be over and after you find out everything's fine, you can relax. Just go.

The procedure can be very terrifying if you have never been, but you have to do it sometime. My first gyno visit was when I was barely 18 and pregnant, thats scary lol. It really isn't as bad as it is made out to be.

Just relax. The person is a professional. Its not painful or anything, just awkward. Its also not really scary at all. Just go and get it done. After all, you could save your life. Just because you haven't had sex doesn't mean cancer doesn't run in your family or you got an infection.

It's not scary, it's also not the greatest time either. You lay with your legs in the stirrups, the doctor always asks you to scrinch your bum down closer and they insert a - hopefully warmed up - speculum and then they crank it so it opens up your vagina - it's not painful, just not nice. Then they poke around with a long Q tip and take out the speculum and usually they insert a finger and push on your belly at the same time to feel that all is in it's rightful place.

Putting the pillow over your face helps.

Ask friends and family for suggestion to a female OB/GYN. You will probably feel more comfortable and less embarrassed with a female. You really need to have that first check and tell the doctor if you are a virgin. Make an appointment for a consultation only first so that you don't get charged for something that you may not need.
