Is it like a kind of bumper? I think so. Most cars have it. It's a rubber strip going along the side acting as a kind of bumper for when you open the door. What is the exact name for it? How do I find that part so as to replace it? I need to find that for a 1997 VW Golf III for my dad. His car is falling apart and that would help the appearance. The driver's side is missing the whole strip.

Its called side molding,or door molding. You can get generic stuff at auto parts stores,or genuine replacement parts at a dealer. Most rubber strips are held on with a special glue.

I think it's called the molding. Any VW dealership can help you or you might want to look for VW repair shops. There is probably a VW site on line. Google volkswagons or search through dealership sites in your area. Good Luck...it's nice that your fixing your dad's car. Happy fathers' day kid!

This is called "Body side molding" you can purchase this from auto parts stores. "3m" and "Prostripe" both make all types of moldings for specific car types and are reasonably priced. if you use one which has adhesive on the back, you may need to use an "adhesion promoter"."Proform" makes this product. This can also be purchased at the auto parts store.
