A pun is a play on words. Specifically the pun is a word or phrase that has a double meaning. As in the common joke: when is a door not a door? When its ajar. "Ajar" has a double meaning and thus is the element of the humour. Many jokes use the pun as their main element.
examples:
-The harm caused by sibling rivalry is relative.
-The plastic surgeon put his patient's nose to the grindstone.
-The scuba diving student was in over his head.
-His plan to manufacture pencils just didn't draw attention.
-New corduroy pillows are making headlines.
-Parachute for sale. No strings attached.
- Confuscious: "Man who fart in church sit in own pew."
- Confuscious: "Man who eat many prunes get good run for money."

Sure, puns are defined as: A play on words, sometimes on different senses of the same word and sometimes on the similar sense or sound of different words.
Just little short nonsensical statements that make people roll their eyes and groan! (Or laugh)
Examples...
The scuba diving student was in over his head.
His plan to manufacture pencils just didn't draw attention.
A boy who looked like his father the sculptor was a chip off the old block.
The one who invented the door knocker got a No-bell prize.
Etc. You get the point.

It's a play on words, usually when one word can be interpreted in multiple ways (a double entendre).
What did you say when the cat scratched you?
Me? Ow.
Alright, that's a pretty bad example, but there ya go. ;)
