More frequent feedings of breast milk or formula to help infants pass the bilirubin in their stool. Also, mild sunlight exposure, be sure it is indirect to keep him from getting burned. Also a UV lamp will help.

Nurse frequently (at least 12 times a day) and put baby in the sun coming through an *open* window (sunlight through glass does not work) for short periods of time several times a day.

By the way, newborn jaundice is actually *good* for a baby. Research recently showed that people who were jaundiced as babies were protected from diseases later in life. Unless your baby was born premature or sick, there is no evidence that *any* level of normal jaundice causes problems (although they do treat just in case). But ignore the people who are telling you to rush to the hospital; healthy babies can't *ever* be hurt by jaundice less than 25 (which is why they treat at 20--before it gets that high).

Babies get jaundiced because their livers can't break down the dead red blood cells fast enough. My 1 mo. old daughter had it at birth. They said that eating more, and pooping would help. Ultimately, they put her on the billi-lights and she was fine in a day.

Ask your doc if the baby HAS to be admitted. They can do home healthcare instead. They can send a light bed (which looks like a scanner) or the blanket to your house. The bed has a gown with a see through back that velcros to the bed. It has arm holes for the baby. They just lay there when they aren't eating or being changed. The light helps them break down the dead blood cells faster.

Basically, you want your baby to be healthy no matter what it takes. But the hospital may not be the only option. Ask your pediatrician for more info

My babies had the same problem. Get him undressed and lay him in front of a window with the sun shinning through! Do this several times a day and it should help! Vitamin D!! That is the same thing that the doctors use with the lamps in the hospital!
Good luck and dont worry too much just yet!! I'm sure that things will be just fine!!
My doc said that it is higher in breastfed babies, and that the more often you nurse the better.

Medical treatment is the best you can do for your son. Jaundice is nothign to play with. Jaundice is just a symptom of an underlying proplem. A certain degree of jaundice is normal in newborn babies due to the breakdown of red blood cells, which release bilirubin into the bllod, and to the immaturity of the newborn's liver, which cannot effectively metabolize the bilirubin and prepare it for excretion into the urine. This can clear up with time. If not seek medical treatment for your son.

2 or 3 times a day put him in just a diaper and sit near a window or somewhere he can get sun light and sit there for 15 to 20 minutes they say sunlight works. Also breast feed baby's do better than formula baby's with jaundice so if u can breast feed till it passes they pee more often because they eat more often so it is supposed get rid of the bile Ruben faster

Pixie is right, my son was a preemie and had jaundice and in order for him to have to go back to the hospital that is what the Dr told me to do with him. Just put him in nothing but his diaper and, pull the curtains back and hold or lay him in front of the window and let him get as much sun light as possible.

My son had jaundice too when he was born and i done everything i knew to do to keep him out of the hospital. I had to take him to the er everyday so they could check his blood to see if it had went down.
Then they told me that i could get those same lights they use when a baby has jaundice from home health (health products store) but he got alright within like 4-5 days.

Good luck

take him off of breast milk for a bit..try formula (go back to breast milk once it clears). Don't worry so much about him being admitted...The hospital is a better controlled environment than home if your baby is sick he is far safer being monitored by the nurses and doctor...This can take some of the worry and uncertainty out of how he is doing. Generally jaundice is easily curable for infants.
(Usually infant jaundice is treated with lights)

Your fears about the hospital are understandable, but ultimately, they can do what is best for your baby. I would call your doctor and even if the answering service picks up, tell them you need someone to call you back and then talk to them about it. You may need to take the baby to the ER. The sooner he gets better, the better. And congrats! Everything will be fine, just relax and do what you know is best, which is getting your child the best professional health care possible.

You should take him to the hospital so they can put the baby under a "Billy Light"....Thats the name of it I'm just not sure if this is the correct spelling.
Alot of babys are born with Jaundice and they put them under the light so it gets rid of it.
The light dosn't hurt the baby.
