chat rooms, games like this, etc. have made us connect globally but why can't we just get to know our own neighbors? what adverse affect will this have on our society socially as a whole?

It's the anonymity of things like this. Same reason people can be more straightforward and honest, even mean in e-mail and in Yahoo Answers. Your neighbors you see all the time and it's like a different relationship. Takes more work, I guess. It's kind of sad now that you bring it up. Makes me want to call my friends down the street or something!!

I know my neighbors, I still need to introduce myself to the neighbor accross the street to the right, and left. but I would say I know the people in 5 homes around me. I think the internet is just another way of communicating with people, another way to socialize, and educate oneself. Maybe YOU need to go introduce yourself to your neighbors so you wont have to ask this question ever again.

I live in a small town in the Rocky mountains so I know all of my neighbors. In the big cities (I grew up in L.A.) people are often a lot less 'involved' with their neighbors. It can be easier, safer and less involved to interact on the net.

Who says we can't get to know our own neighbors? I know almost everyone in my subdivision and my family does know everyone in the subdivision. And all the ones I know like us, bringing and cooking and buying us cakes and snacks randomly, and birthday presents.

Because we can be whoever we want to be on the internet. Inter personal relationship is disappearing due to technology advancement and selfishness on our part.
