if you want a small animal you can't beat a hamster. I've had gerbils, dwarf hamsters, and now i have a tortoise shell hamster. it's by far the most fun! Hamster's live alone, and they usually come out to play in the late evening or night. Mine has never nipped or tried to bite me. She's very playful and friendly and she loves running around the house in her ball.

My dwarf hamster died quickly. It turned out to have diabetes, which I found out is quite common in dwarfs. But they are much smaller than hamsters and are very cute. If you get this kind, don't feed it much sweet stuff (like any of the treats you find in pet stores).

Gerbils are fun because you can have more than one. They are very social and more active than hamsters (they looove the cages with crazy tunnels). My gerbils were escape artist though! They could escape from anything - i'm not kidding. I still don't know how they got out of my aquarium tank with a heavy book on the lid??? They are fun to watch and if handled often, can be very tame. Mine liked to nip at you, but it never really hurt. The downside is they reproduce like crazy!!! Make sure you get two of the same gender or you will have way more gerbils than you want!

I've never had a rat because they need a lot of space and you should have more than one because they are social. I don't have that kind of room, but if I did I would have those, too! They are much smarter and you can train them well.

Make sure whatever you get, it is age appropriate for your sis! Small animals might be noisy at night (running on wheels) and they need lots of care. If she's not up for that, get her a fish that is low maintenance like a betta or tetras. If you choose goldfish, remember that they need a minimum of 5 gallons of water per fish (more if they are big). Don't keep a goldfish in a bowl... it's not nearly enough room! Bettas are nice because they require very little space and no filters, and they are pretty clean.

some other ideas: hermit crabs, lizard, snails, turtle, guinnea pig... ok, that's all from me. good luck!!

I have 2 dogs, well 3 sort of. I have a 6 yr old male lab/beagle mix, and I have a 1 year old female yellow lab. They are both real good with children. Today there was a female dachshund that was laying on the steps of our office. I brought her home and gave her some food and water. I'm going to put an ad in the paper to see if anyone claims her. She was real good with our 2 year old son as well.

we have an octagon aquarium with variety of fishes. i've dream of having a tropical fish in salty water, they are so beautiful, especially the colorful ones. it not hard to maintain an aquarium, just make sure you have the proper food, right temperature of water, good pump, nice filter and decorations but not too many fish. just imagine watching the fishes playing with each other, it will calm you down, entertain you, fun to watch and a good nite light.

we also have a bird-a cockatiel that whistle and interact with us. she is adorable and love to play, feel like she is talking back, especially when you talk to her...

it depends how old ur lil sister is, if she can take care of a pet,and what she likes, and ask ur sister what shed prefer, then u decide if she can take care of it and so on.

I have a dog, cat, conure, cockateil, 2 finches, 4 mice. All were rescued. If you are looking for a pet please go to a animal shelter, they are good pets in need of loving homes.

I have four cats, 2 dogs, and fish. I would say my fish are the easiest to care for. I have a family of guppies... so it's neat to see the babies every couple months or so.

I have 2 dogs...and I had 3 rats....I know you will think ewww. But I am telling you ...I was the same way...when my daughter came to me asking to get rats for her pet....I thought I would die!!! so I did alot of research about pet rats...that is entirely different than sewer rats...or any of those ugly looking rats you see in the wild...I am talking about fancy rats...which is what they call now days. They are small, very clean (in fact they clean themselves about 88% of the time each day!!!) and they get upset when their cage gets dirty. when you clean their cage....they literally squeek like they are happy and jump around with excitement. It is reallllly cute!!! I think they are better pets than a hamster...I had hamsters growing up....Rats are very sociable animals...and they will come to their owners if you call them...they are very very smart too...you can even teach them tricks just like a dog. My daughter taught her 3 rats how to play hide and seek. They actually go and hide while she is counting then she says here I come....as she finds them...they laugh...you really hear them laugh...with their squeek I can't explain it but it is sooooooo cute!!! You can even take them everywhere with you...it is just the awesome and easiest pet to have. They do not bite in the three years I had them...not one has bit me..except one time one of the rats mistaken my finger as food because I had the smell of food on it...but she didn't bite hard...she nibbled it first...then she realized it was my finger...and licked it just like a dog as if she was saying oops sorry..... and yes they actually do kiss you by licking you. When I get one of the rats to put it on my shoulder to do dishes so that I can have company...she would get excited and kisses me on my check...and just watches me while she is bruxing. Bruxing is their sound letting you know they are content and happy...just like a cat when they purr. When they do it...it is them taking their front teeth and grinding it together...that is the best way I can describe it....but it is really neat to hear it becuase you just know they are happy. So yeah I did fall in love with the rats... I have had my rats all between 11/2 to 21/2 years....The bad thing about having these rats is they age realllllly fast and only last about 2 to 4 years depending how you take care of them. We just buried our third rat, Pearl yesterday....she was just a darling... that was really hard on us...and I didn't even think I was going to cry!!! Oh one more thing to remember, if you do get a rat...don't get just one....get at least one because as I said...rats are socialable animals...and I believe it.....when Pearl lost her 2 sisters, she became very lonely...and we tried to spend as much as we could with her....I really think she died of a broken heart. Really a pet rat is the BEST!!!! Got anymore questions please contact me d4wn4j3sus@yahoo.com
