approaching people is a risk any way you look at it.

This is probably not what you want to hear :( but this is true: You have to be willing to seem foolish, and the only way you can conquer the fear of being laughed at is to learn to laugh at yourself.

I have learned through many years of experience that the risk is absolutely worth it. I have gained close soul-friends by approaching them and telling them I wanted to get to know them better.

Sounds silly, but it's so simple. I know--it's direct, but you know what, it's honest.

When's the last time you told someone you liked her/him? When's the last time someone told YOU that? How would you feel if someone did say that to you?

Don't come on strong--that's creepy. If you like the way someone thinks, tell her so. If you like her style, tell her.

And SMILE! Seriously. Genuine smiles are inviting--and frankly, not enough people do it.

Good luck :)

Try laughter, it's international. For example; If you're sitting by someone in a class you'd like to be friends with simply wait for an option to throw out something sarcastic or funny. It breaks the ice and leads to conversation later on.
