Generally, doctors categorize any pregnancy past 35 as high risk. The odds of having a baby with a birth defect are much higher, and as far as you are concerned, you have a higher risk of miscarriage, a higher risk of diabetes, and you are more likely to have other problems with the pregnancy.

That having been said, with proper prenatal care, more and more women are having successful pregnancies well into their '40's.

Higher risks of miscarriage, preterm/premature birth, and a variety of birth defects. As for the defects, many of the ones that are associated with age risks can be screened for in early pregnancy. It might also be harder to get pregnant. However, many 41 yr olds have wonderful healthy babies!

My parents tried for 20 years to have me! My Mom was 42 back in 1967 & the only thing she was really worried @ was Down's Syndrome.

I was 2 weeks overdue & came into the world weighing 9lbs, 12oz and 20" long (pretty big for a girl!). The only thing that happened to me was a valve didn't shut off in my heart when I was born & ended up having open-heart surgery at 3 1/2 yrs.

She didn't have any health problems carrying me- due to a diligent OB/GYN Dr.- and ate whatever she wanted. She had/still has asthma but that didn't slow her down!

The field of Medicine concerning pregnancy has advanced so much, I don't think you'll have any problems unless you already have a serious health problem; but your OB Dr. SHOULD address that.

If you want, you can email me for help. Good Luck!

I have heard it said that babies of women who are middle-aged tend to run a higher risk for chromosomal defects (ie. Downs Syndrome) because the genetic material "aint what it used to be".
But so many women have happy healthy babies after 40. You just have to take special care of yourself pre-conception (take that folic acid sis!), during pregnancy (excellent nutrition and proper physical activity). And prepare for birth. Healing will be slower. Motherhood will also be a bit more of a hardship unless you are in great physical health. I'm 27, and being up at night with my 10 month old, then chasing my 3yo all day WEARS ME OUT totally.

Be prepared and take care of yourself.

It's still possible. Use birth control until a Dr says you no longer need it.

My mother had me at age 42. If you are in good health, you should be fine. "Older" women are having babies more and more often.
