It depends on what the book is about. If you want "community" like all the people who grew up in a certain town, then I would post fliers at libraries and coffee houses. You could try to target class reunions too. If you need people with a certain experience then you need to target those areas. Like if you want cancer survivors, then you might go to support groups at the local hospital.

People might like to see sample stories or read more about the project before they agree to contribute.

And if all else fails, I suppose you could pay them ;)

How big is your community?

The community books on 9/11 and Oklahoma were written by people got together through web sites and newspaper advertisements.

"Naked came the stranger" by Penelope Ash was a community work by journalists who shared the same bar.

Tracey Emin's community art project was made up of all her lover's names. So Tracey Emin picked up her co-artists everywhere. See Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963 - 1995

So look at your community and contact them through the most appropriate method.
If it's people you've slept with you should have their numbers.
If your community belongs to a recognized organization such as a university or club or business use the existing newsletters and websites to get your writers.
If your community is larger place advertisements in community newspapers and on the net.

I think a local newspaper add would be helpful -- also posting random flyers around the community. Perhaps, too, there are writing groups meeting in the community that you could contact.

You might try placing an ad for writers on Craiglist on the internet, or in a local newspaper. Or on a college campus.
