Take the battery out, leave the laptop plugged in.
If the problem is the battery, then the problem will go away of course. If it doesn't, then you have to check your Power settings in Windows (look in the Control Panel). You might have it set to hibernate or sleep after a certain period of inactivity.
It is possible for a battery to go bad even if you leave it plugged in most of the time. Lithium Ion batteries should be completely discharged every so often to extend their life span. Someone up above said they only last 1 year, but that's a bunch of crock. You should get at least 4 years out of the battery with proper use.

The batteries should be charged only & when required. Over charging decreases the life span of batteries. shut off can be because 2 reasons. Either you need to replace the battery or your laptop is on battery saving mode ie. it goes in standy mode automatically.
But the chances of battery replacement are more. You can check this by keeping the computer connected to the charger & check if its still shuts down. If it does then the problem is somewhere else. Also get the battery charger checked, is it really doing its job.

If you use the battery and have the computer plugged in the wall, yes you COULD need a new battery. Let say this again. you COULD. But why? If you have used the power supply and the battery, chances are you burnt the battery up. You do NOT have to have the battery in your computer while it is plugged in. It is handy to do so in bad weather if your really busy and the risk of a power failure would be costly to you. Otherwise, sounds like you wasted a battery. Don't be foolish and waste money on a new battery if your not going to actually use your laptop on the go. I personally sell my batteries on Ebay. I get about $100 for them, so it helps reduce the cost of the computer. I prefere the power supple over the battery.

Yes, most laptop batteries have an optimal life span of 1 year. After that, they tend to fade and cannot be charged to the highest point. Eventually the battery will fail.

That actually increases the chances of needing to replace the battery. If you have the battery full charged 100% of the time, the life expectancy of the battery drops significantly.

I don't think it has anything to do with your battery. If your computer goes inactive for however long (depending on your settings) it will automatically shut off.
