I think Iron Butterfly was stoned when they recorded that song it was supposed to be " In the garden of Eden" but came out in a gadda da vida.

The title was supposed to be "In The Garden Of Eden." Someone had written "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," possibly while drunk, on a demo copy. A record company executive saw it and decided to use it as the title, since it sounded mystical, and Eastern spirituality was big at the time, with The Beatles going to India and The Rolling Stones experimenting with Indian instruments.

From what I hear, they were trying to say "In the Garden of Eden," but someone was drunk/high/something and that's what came out... or someone thought that "In a gadda da vida" was the real name of the song....

According to the myth, the lead singer (Doug Ingle) was high when the idea for the song was pitched to him, and instead of saying 'In the Garden of Eden' he was so high that he accidentally said 'In a Gadda Da Vida." They liked it so much they kept it.

In reality, the drummer (Ron Bushy) couldn't hear it correctly through the headphones when he asked Doug Ingle for the title of the song. I guess it stuck.

They say he was trying to say "In the Garden Of Eden" (while he was drunk) but they liked the way it sounded and changed the name of the song to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, making it sound more mysterious and intriguing because of peoples curiousity.

I concur with the previous comments. Being a child of the 60's, I used to sing it constantly. The rest of the lyrics point you in that direction as well.

Oh, don't we just love the oldies? How about Louie, Louie? Now there's some lyrics for ya? Or even Wolly Bully....I'm an oldies freak, I guess.

I saw on VH1's "I Love The 70's" that it was In the Garden of Eden but the lead singer was too messed up to pronounce it right so the other name stuck.
