Machynlleth was the ancient capital. Not sure if it was directly before Cardiff.

Looks like I'm going to get two shots at this question?? but my answer is the same!!
Wales had no capital city prior to 1957, unless you consider London as the capital of the UK.
There was no capital per se of Wales but Cardiff "won" over Swansea for the honor in 1957.
Prior to that the "old" capital was Machynlleth as that had been the last stronghold of the Welsh princes.
Hows that (again) Boyo??
