I know they are a lot less expensive. Are they worth the money or should I just get a regular sewing machine? I am starting to make dresses as a hobby for my little girl. I have hand sewed others but would like to get a machine instead.

If you are sewing for your daughter, buy a regular sewing machine. So many of the machines today have built in decorative stitches and functions that making sewing a breeze! I just bought a Brother sewing machine at Wal Mart and I just love it. Also, if you want to make really pretty dresses for her go to www.marthapullen.com where you can learn wonderful techniques, and try to catch her show on PBS.

Do >not< get a cheap, low-end machine. It will cause you so much trouble that you'll end up hating sewing and giving it up. I always recommended to my students that if they couldn't afford any of the big names - Janome, Pfaff, Bernina - that they should go to Sears and pick up one of the better Kenmores. The electronic ones were being made in the Janome factories, so they have metal moving parts (very important reason to stay away from Singer machines) and a lot of the features that make sewing easier. You want a machine that does automatic buttonholes, but that's the only bell and whistle feature that's essential. Look for one with a drop-in bobbin, and check to make sure that the take-up lever has a curve or a thin metal piece to hold the thread in, because thread slipping from the take-up lever during sewing is the most common cause of problems.
