One thing you can address is misconceptions of free speech. The reaction to those offended by the Dixie Chicks' statements are a good example.

I personally think the conservatives made too big of a deal over what the Dixie Chicks said, but the claim I hear by liberals that the Dixie Chicks' freedom of speech was being violated was rediculous!

They have not been sent to jail. The government has not banned their music. People who were offended by their statements choose to express their opinions by not buying Dixie Chick music & telling radio stations they would change the channel if a Dixie Chick song came on.

The Dixie Chicks had every right to say what they felt, & their fans had every right to say they wouldn't buy Dixie Chicks CDs anymore. BOTH are exercising their freedom of speech!

Freedom of speech goes both ways!

Well, let me see.

1. Free speech is a fundamental right of all citizens of the US.
2. People have died so that we might have free speech since before the revolutionary war.
3. One of the things that makes US society really strong is the fact that we do have free speech.
4. The First Amendment of the US Constitution is:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
5. If anything has to change, it is that the shady usages of the free speech amendment need to be strengthened, including pornography and child pornography.
6. We have to be very careful about making changes to the US Constitution, because it governs all. Many courts feel that it is better to let the State Laws govern rather than Federal Laws.
7. I personally would rather not fix the questionable areas if it would invalidate the sacrifices others have made to give us this wonderful right.
8. Some of the current problems are that people have the right to say almost anything at any time to any body and sometimes what is said is really obscene. For example, there was a case about freedom of speech on the Internet. Here is the basics

Free Speech on the Internet Preserved in Reno v. ACLU

In a landmark decision issued on June 26,1997, the Supreme Court held that the Communications Decency Act violated the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of speech. The Court's opinion, written by Justice John Paul Stevens, resoundingly rejects censorship of the on-line medium and establishes the fundamental principles that will guide judicial consideration of the Internet for the 21st Century. EPIC is proud to have participated in this historic litigation as both plaintiff and co-counsel.

So a lot of the things that people want to change are offensive behaviors.

Hope this helps and good luck with the speech. Stong voice... show confidence... don't read but share and use the notes for keeping order.

Hmm, I don't wanna write your speech for you, and it is better to go in depth on one facet than give a precis that doesn't really explain anything. Copyright/patent law is an interesting venue. It has changed a lot in modern history and affects our lives in a big way. All modern communication is by nature copyrighted (assuming it has somehow been recorded) and the way this information is manipulated and disseminated is governed by federal law.

Or you can talk about terrorism. If I have the right to peacably assemble, and I am discussing something illegal, but have not yet violated another's rights, should I be held legally accountible?

There's campaign finance reform and the way that congress is allegedly controlling campaign funding to ensure their own reelections.

Well, if it persuasive, you need to take a stand on something.
You could say that the right to free speech is abused in our country. People have the right to say whatever they want. Many people use that right in a way just to offend or inflame others.
or you could say that the right to free speech is infringed by laws such as those that dictate the boundaries protestors must follow.
Most of all, do whatever you are passionate about. Persuasion is about appearing passionate about your subject.
Good Luck!
