There are basically two places where you can work to stop the SPAM:

1. in your system and its software, as suggested by above 3 responses.

2. Please inform you ISP or whosoever providing you the Internet/Broadband service. They are also able to "block" SPAM. It worked with me.

By the way, I am far from an 'expert' on these Trouble Shooting, I am a victim like you and learnt (and still learning) after getting bombarded by the SPAM, Spyware and such menaces. Best of Luck!!

Block them from your contact list / otherwise. When you entire into Yahoo! Messenger, go to Preferences, and see the options of communication with your contacts. If you happen to see like "only receive messages for members of my contact list" or something in relation to that statement, then by all means, select that option. However, as each unsolicited member approaches you online, block them one at a time. In terms of shut down, you may need to check to see if you need to upgrade your computer memory, operating system, internet connection, or at least scan for viruses and other virtual parasites.
Good luck.
