Lack of maintenance and replacement or faulty tensioners, oil or water contamination of the belt will all run the risk of loss of timing and severe damage to the engine. (pistons hitting valves at high speed). Ignition timing is far less critical and in your case it is governed by the distributor. Assuming its a OHC motor,it would be a worn timing belt or chain.
