There are two trees on my street that are slowly dying. There is no evidence of any type of bug infestation or anything like that. It almost looks like something is coming along and "scraping" the bark off of the branches, and then the branch dies. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

could be a parasite of fungal infection in the tree. Call the local town or city official, and ask to have the trees checked. If it is on your property then call a local plant and tree nursery to see what types of diseases are affecting the local trees, and what is available to treat them. Don't for get some types of tree have branches die off every year as well. (Don't go out your self to trim any if you suspect that the trees could be touch above or below ground wires.)

like all trees your trees are dying to chemicals and the air quality. Trees are protecting you from the sun and other environmental problems such poor air, water run offs, each tree helps you, then you say "scraping the bark " is one kills the branch just dies, check how big the branch is, check the how big the tree is the trunk
of the is strong, your tree maybe very sensitve to harsh treatment from others.

It could be a blight..which is a kind of epidemic for plants. We currently have one in my county affective Sassafras trees.

Is more than one variety of trees affected? You can contact the Forestry Department of your state or Province for help and answers.
