Wales had no capital city before 1957 unless you consider London as the capital of the UK.
There was no capital per se of Wales but Cardiff "won" over Swansea for the honour in 1957.
Prior to that the "old" capital was Machynlleth which had been the last stronghold of the Welsh princes.

Before 1955 there was no capital, as a Principality it was governed directly from Westminster.
