Learning ballet, of course, requires lessons, because if you do it incorrectly, you can get hurt. For everything else, it is possible to learn by copying people and then practicing it over and over again until your moves match up. But then, all you could ever do is to copy by slowly repeating moves one section at a time.
You'll always be stuck with how to communicate and understand moves verbally, which is how to teach your moves to someone else or how trained dancers teach others. Trained dancers can rattle off a long, complex dance combination in one quick sentence and the rest of the (trained) group could then start dancing it.
"Learning" to dance means that your entire body, including your brain, understands what it is doing. That is why this discipline ranks with the others that are grouped under "Arts & Humanities."

All, right--- 2 things.
One, why not take lessons?
Two, dude, just dance. Dance is about the body and your experience of what you feel and responding with movement. There's no right way or wrong way to do it. There's just style. Find your own and rock out. Me I'm way into freestyle and ballroom so whether it's a rave or a lindy hop I love cutting a rug, AND I'm also the biggest guy there ususally and I learned that the best way is to just do it and don't ask questions. Do what you love. Now having a coach whose purpose is to support you to get what you want is INVALUABLE!!! Finding a good dance teacher can be tricky but you can find a great coach the same way you dance. Listen to their sound. If it moves you, there's something there for you, if not, keep on moving until you find your groove. The sense I get is that you may have some hang ups about dancing, or what people will think of you, I may be wrong but why else wouldn't you get some lessons? Dancing with good dancers is a treat, man! I love it when i find people who really knows their ****. I also love it when someone can't dance to save their soul but their heart's in it. IT's like anything, if your heart ain't there, why do it? Ya dig? Now get out there and shake whacha mamma gave ya!
Now what I did was take a lot of drugs and party all the time. I don't recommend this approach at all. Not because i have anything against drugs but I realized that it was a false sense of confidence and security. I want authenticity in my life and drugs weren't it, fun, but not authentic expression. Now if you need to do something radical to break the shell go for it. Just care for yourself. Dancing should be like fine food and laughter, it should nourish every avenue of your life. So i stopped doing drugs and kept dancing and am a legendary dancer in the rave community and can swing with the best of em despite the fact that I'm over 300 lbs. Lessons or not why ask questions you already have the answer to? Just Do It!

Honestly? You can't really if you want to truly learn to dance for real. Any lesson in any form is better than merely watching people and videos. If you're dead set against, or can't afford formal lessons, at least get instructional DVDs for the type of dance you want to do where they break down movements so you can get a sense of all that dancing entails, or some 'lessons' from friends who can dance. Simply copying moves may help you out in clubs, though, so it depends on what YOU mean by "dance."

That depends largely on what kind of dance you want to do. Some of it, like swing dance, street dance, break dance, etc, you can learn by watching and finding a partner who can help you, but if you're looking at something like tap or ballet, you're going to need instruction. And probably for good ballroom dancing as well.

What type of dancing do you want to do? Ballroom, jazz, tap. If you want to learn a specific style, you can generally get videos. In many styles, however it is best to take lessons if you can, so that you can have someone to guide you into the proper movements, styling and form.

All that you have to do is watch people dance and take some of their moves.. But, now a days most things people do are dancing. So, you can do anything and it will be considered dancing.

If you want to be a really great dancer, formal dance instruction is a must. If you just want to get out on the floor at a nightclub and spazz out, you just get out there and wave your hands in the air like you just don't care! Seriously, I recommend dance lessons.
