I'm reminded of a stupid math joke my father once told me. A farmer saved up his money so he could send his son off to college, where the young man decided to major in mathematics.

When he came home on a break, his father wanted to see what he was getting for his money so he said "Son, tell me something in that fancy college talk. Don't you know some other language or something?"

"Well, dad, actually I'm studying mathematics," the son replied.

"Well say something in mathematics then," said the farmer. "I want to see what I'm getting for all the money I'm spending."

"OK, dad," replied the son, thinking quickly, until he came up with something. "Ah yes, here's a nifty formula, pi 'r' squared."

The infuriated farmer pushed his son to the ground. "What kind of nonsense are they teaching you? Everyone knows that pie are round. Cornbread are squared!"

By definition, pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is always the same number, no matter which circle you use to compute it.

For the sake of usefulness people often need to approximate pi. For many purposes you can use 3.14159, which is really pretty good, but if you want a better approximation you can use a computer to get it. Here's pi to many more digits: 3.14159265358979323846.

The area of a circle is pi times the square of the length of the radius, or "pi r squared":

A = pi*r^2

(also pi squared) The 16th letter of the Greek alphabet.

Mathematics. A transcendental number, approximately 3.14159, represented by the symbol, that expresses the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle and appears as a constant in many mathematical expressions.
