What is progressive rock? Band examples are nice, but I want more than that.

I wont bother with examples but the fundamental idea behind prog is the creation of new and unique musical ideas. Usually prog is the fusion of two or more genres and the technical ability of the musicians is stressed. This also includes concept albums, odd time signatures and many solos (Note for most people, Keyboard does not equal progressive.)

EDIT: Bands like Yes, Rush, King Crimson, Dream Theater, Spocks Beard and Symphony X (the latter two being examples of heavier prog.)
