NO!!! All those answers are wrong. It is unrelated to the Herpes virus. It is caused by stress, menstraution, food allergies, mouth abrasions, and lack of vitamin B12 and iron. There are plenty of ways to heal it. Check wikipedia. Cold sores are different from canker sores. They generally appear on the corner of the mouth (extnerally). Those are caused by Herpes simplex--still not an STD. Canker sores generally last 7 to 10 days, but drugstores sell penty of remedies.

Canker sores are simply ulcers caused by virus, infected cut or abrasion, stress, or dietary deficiencies. They do return back if not taken care of properly. They are quite painful because they are open sores. Due to the moisture in your mouth, they never scab over like regular sores will. This is what makes them so painful and hard to get rid of.

CANKER SORES ARE NOT THE SAME AS COLD SORES! I don't know where people get their info but canker sores are an open ulcer like sore in the mouth. They can be caused by stress, an injury, diet, hormonal changes, and the list goes on. Canker sores will heal themselves unless an infection occurs and then you should seek medical advice.
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 which is normally associated with sores above the waist while Herpes Simplex Virus 2 is commonly associated with the sexual transmitted infection. The two can be located in opposite region and transmitted via activites like oral sex.
So, in all, don't worry about canker sores...just hang in there through the pain. It'll go away. Oh and canker sores are normally in the mouth while cold sores are on the face. Hope this is easier to understand!

Canker sores have a large variety of methods to arrive. In fact when i was younger, just being stressed out would give me canker sores. Another is biting your cheeks. Dental work (braces especially) often develope canker sores. There are some viruses associated with canker sores.
I go and buy canker sore medicine from walgreens. if you want a simple way to heal them up just get some of that. Follow the instructions. If they do not heal up in about 7-10 days consult your dentist or hygienist. if they are unusually painful, consult your dentist right away.
Remember, if you can ask a stranger you can ask the professionals in your life. dentists can indeed be scary sometimes, but they are also the formost experts about this.
Be healthy,
Silence

a canker sore-if not where you bit your tongue or cheek,etc- is caused by a virus.
It is a tiny bump that due to the warm, moist conditions in your mouth, becomes infected.
Use salt water swish.

I highly suggest using 1 part Mylanta and 1 part Benadryl liquid mix and swish and spit with 1 tablespoon 4 times a day. (usually when the doctor write a RX for this it also has 1 part lidocaine but thats not avail. over the counter and its only for the pain) The mylanta helps with pain and the benadryl helps to reduce the size of the cancer sores. Hope this helps

I get canker sores allllll the time. I always have two or three going on in my mouth. They are cause by abrasive food such as cold cereal, chips and even toast can cause it to happen. Orabase is good and bee propolis works good, anything that will coat the cankersore and numb it. If it is burning put baking soda on it to make it stop the acid in your mouth from burning it further. Do not try salt, alum or anything that will make it burn more although for awhile I was curing my cankersores with vinegar, that worked for awhile. Keep your mouth as clean as you can because the canker sores can get infected and last longer. Brush your teeth with carbamide peroxide.
