Stephen William Hawking (born 8 January 1942), CH, CBE, FRS, is considered one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge (a post once held by Sir Isaac Newton), and a fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

Despite enduring severe disability and, of late, being rendered quadriplegic by motor neurone disease (specifically, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), he has had a successful career for many years, and has achieved status as an academic celebrity.

Stephen Hawking is alive.

He has Ameliotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. It is a motor neuron disease, which gradually destroys the ability of the nerves to transmit sensory data and motive instructions to and from the brain. It produces paralysis, slowly and systematically. This is why he uses a wheelchair and a vocoder - he can't control his limbs or vocal cords.

It obviously does not effect intelligence, as Hawking is one of the most intelligent people now living. But is a tragic irony that one of the best minds on Earth is trapped in one of the most-helpless bodies.

No, Stephen the great physicist is still alive. He is a quadriplegic. It means that he is paralysed from neck down. He has to move around in an electronic wheelchair and has to use a computerized voice synthesizer to speak.
