Consumer Reports would be the best place to start.
Bias is usually based on experience and opinion. If someone is happy with something they usually tout it. Does that mean it's the best? Not strictly, but in my experience, I use and enjoy Trane or Carrier. For one thing, they make a decent product both for residential and commercial use.

I never tried air conditioners, but.. whenever I need to compare or get unbiased opinions on a product, I search Amazon.com . People like you and me leave feedback and ratings on products they bought. I'm not sure if Ac would be on there though.
