my computer is logged on all the time, but my friends say that my name on their list logs off and on throughout the day even when I am idle.

I solved the same problem with mine too like this:

Firstly, there are two messengers installed on your computer that is the reason why you keep logged out from one and signed-in to another one. When you install windows or buy a new PC with windows pre-installed, you get Windows Messenger with it. When you download a new version of MSN Messenger, the windows messenger still remains infact hidden in the memory.

The best way to remove it is to do the following:
Click on Start > Run.
type msconfig.
Click on Startup tab and look for msnmsgr. You may find two msnmsgr, firstly, uncheck both and click on OK. Now once you run MSN messenger, it will automatically go into startup.

Oh also, once you re-start your computer, you will get an information message, just ignore it.
