I play keyboards: Hoochie Coochie Men: mp3idaho.idahostatesman.com It is a GREAT idea to learn bass because there are NEVER enough of them and you'll always be able to find a band because everyone NEEDS a bass-duos for example. I also play left hand keyboard bass and THAT is a good skill to learn(The guy from the Doors played lefty key bass)...many of the electric pianos of today have "split points" so you can delegate the bottom keys for the bass part....It IS hard but you can get a lot of gigs cuz you are BOTH the Keyboard player w/ your RIGHT hand and the BASS player with the LEFT hand....The Young Rascals guys played Hammond B-3 bass pedals, which I never learned....Jimmy Smith and Groove Holmes were/are both left hand Hammond B-3 bass players. You just have to start wearing earphones(not too loud)and picking apart basslines and then trying them on your left hand......ORRRRRRRRRRRRRR, start taking bass guitar lessons from a pro teacher NOW so you make fast progress and don't pick up bad technique. The bassist for most of the Motown stuff(James Jamerson) was a monster. LISTEN to bass parts in relation to what CHORDS the guitarist and keyboardist are playing:of course, the rule of thumb basicaaly is:the bassist plays the ROOT(tonic, "1") of the chord being played in the song. Tom Petty and Neil Young songs are easy to follow and analyze. EVERYONE plays guitar, there are NEVER enough bassists! Play open strings and low notes to give the band a good "bottom" and let the notes "ring out"...The bass part in "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix is cool...but PLAY ALONG with cd's...if a band is popular and famous, they usually have a solid/tasteful bassist who doesn't OVERPLAY

I play guitar pretty well, and I'm learning to play violin. I really want to pick up playing piano again though(i only played a year or two), because it's such a versatile instrument.

I play acoustic guitar and am self taught. One thing that
improved my chord knowledge and appreciation of
arrangements was when I bought the Paul McCartney's
Wings complete songbook. It obviously helps if you like
McCartneys music, but I found an amazing world of chords and
arrangement of chords in this book when I was starting out.
Much better than the oversimplified "bland" arrangement that are
often put out.
It helped my playing immensely particularly when I wanted to
write my own songs.
Good Luck
Jimmy

I play the guitar. I'm not great but I can play stuff like Let it Be and Day Tripper by the Beatles. I enjoy it and like to play music with my friends.
