The higher the number of karets on gold referes to how soft the gold is. The higher the number the better quality it is, also the less additives like silver or nickel it has in it. Zircon diamond refers to man made diamonds versus a real nature made diamond.

24K gold is "pure" gold, 100%. 14 K would be 14/24 pure. Jewelry isn't made with 24K very often as it is too soft to stand up to any kind of wear, Instead, it is alloyed with other metals. Zircons, cubic zirconia, and the like are artificial "diamonds." They are not as hard, nor do they retain the same sparkle when dirty. They CAN look pretty darn good, and are not a bad substitute when funds are low....

The numbers in gold represent it's purity. 24K is pure gold and is never used for jewlery because it is to soft. When gold is used for jewlery it has to have other metals added to it in order to make it stiffer and less likely to bend. That is where the purity indicator comes in. Like I said 24K or 24 Karat is pure gold, 12K is 50% gold and 50% other metals (usually nickel and copper). Jewlery is usually made from either 10K-(42%) 14K-(58%) or 18K-(75%). Gold can also be either the standard yellow color or can be "white" like silver.

Silver, platinum and white gold are all silvery metals that are used for making jewlery, of the 3, platinum is the most expensive and hardest metal, white gold is next and then silver.

Silver can also be found in different purities because pure silver is almost as soft as gold. The number stamped on the inside of a ring will give you the purity but can be misleading. Silver is graded in purity by giving it a 3 didgit number. 925 is the most common silver jewlery purity used and indicates 92.5% pure and is commonly refured to as "Sterling Silver" 800 is considered coin silver because it is the purity used by the US to mint their silver coins before 1964. and 999 is as pure as silver gets for practical uses.

Zircon is a man made diamond, The name is also used as a generic name for any man made diamond, Real diamonds are mined from the ground and then shaped and polished.
