Sting; without a doubt!
Granted, all three are quite talented, but the depth and breadth of thought in Sting's lyrics goes so far beyond the others; it's like comparing G.K. Chesterton to Danielle Steele, IMHO. Favorite examples: Synchronicity II, Russians, Shape of My Heart.
Vocally, I've never been too impressed by Paul; I don't think he's even in the same league as Freddy & Sting. Again, I've heard a greater variety of vocal styles on Sting's recordings. And like them all, of course. Favorites: Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Moon over Burboun Street, Shadows in the Rain.
Composition & arrangement are the toughest ones for me, and the areas in which I think they are most closely matched. Still, going from 'Synchronicity' to 'Dream of the Blue Turtles' to 'Nothing like the Sun,' I think one would be hard-pressed to find any artist or group with such a range. Examples: Don't Stand So Close to Me, Mother, Tea in the Sahara, Children's Crusade.
(Yeah, if I were a girl, I'd probably even swoon over him!) :D

Man, this is a hard one.......
All in all .....with all things considered for each artist....I would say Paul McCartney! Him & the other members of the Beatles changed Rock n Roll history as we know it....also to mention Paul Mcartney can sing, write music & play guitar , write lyrics, and embodies many things that make him unlike anyone else. He is a groundbreaker for many artists.
And could be defined as a groundbreaker for Queen ( freddie mercury ) and Sting!!!
To give credit where credit is due, without a doubt, Freddie Mercury could probably be the Best, if not one of the best Male Vocal Rock Singers of all time!! His range is incredible, and was a great performer for any audience who had the oppurtunity to see it!

Sting hands down. The other two don't have the range Sting does. Sting writes insightful lyrics and appeals to a large audience. I also enjoy his experimentation with music styles and different instrumentation.
Paul McCartney was a good writer when he was paired with John Lennon. But since their split he hasn't had many hits or even memorable songs.
As for Freddie Mercury, he was avant garde. He brought opera to the rockers which was cool. He also has a better range than McCartney. But he didn't last long enough to compare to the others.

Freddie Mercury. I love the Beatles, but I'm not a big fan of Paul by himself. Freddie Mercury had a beautiful voice. He was also very different(is eccletic the right word?). I personally can't stand Sting!

Tough one, if we are looking at a whole career, I'm inclined to go with Mr. McCartney, based almost solely on his Beatles work, I'm not to much of a fan of the post Beatles stuff. He doesn't have much of a voice, but I think he's got the others beat on composition, lyrics and arrangement.
That comparison isn't really fair to Mr. Mercury, who spent his career with Queen. In my not so humble opinion, he has the best voice in Rock and Roll, Period.
Honestly, I never cared for The Police or Sting, so I'll throw him at the bottom.
In the end I'll have to go McCartney, based on the standard of "total package".

You already know. "Freddie Mercury" He was born into this world to do just what he did. 1. his voice would send chills through your body. 2. his stage presence was captivating. How could he be on a stage preforming and you not watch him ? 3. his songs were all so very different, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", then "a crazy little thing called love" They were so very different. But at the same time they were great. 4. Freddie was in love with himself, and his music. I loved him. He brought music to generations of young people who love his " WE WILL ROCK YOU". Little kid's know that song.. Just like Mohammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elvis, and Liz Taylor. Freddie ranks up there with them. There will never be another on like him. The others are good, but Freddie was great. Not to mention he was absolutely beautiful, even his teeth.

I like Sting an awful lot, but as for the whole package, I think it was Freddy Mercury...in particular his composing and arranging. His music is timeless and an essential part of our collective subconcious...

Of the three choices, Mercury is my personal favorite. Paul was never any good on his own. The Beatles were only good as a group (same as the Beachboys), and sting just plain and simply sucks!
