It is not coincidence, it is because of it. the moon and its cycle affects nearly everything on earth, tides etc. The human body is mostly made up of water. Moon=luna=lunacy=lunatic
The early people saw the affects of the moon on their women, and made them go into special huts until they were back to normal. so next time your gf starts screaming at you because she is cramped up tighter than a guitar string, and is angry because blood is running down her leg, Look to the moon and understand.

Probably, yes. No other primate has a ovulatory cycle that matches the lunar cycle, although all primate do have one. At least one other primate even has a concealed cycle, as humans do - meaning that it is not displayed by obvious physical signals, such as a change of color or engorgement of the external genitalia.

In addition, the 28 day cycle is only an average cycle, and not a universal standard: perfectly healthy women have cycles that range from 21 to 60-odd days. The lunar cycle does not vary in the same way.

There is also the amusing fact the the lunar cycle is dependent on its current orbital distance from the Earth. It has been closer in the past and it will be farther away in the future, so its length will not stay synced to the human menstrual cycle forever.

Actually in many acupuncture practices and other traditional medicine systems a woman's cycle may be brought into allignment with the moon's cycle. This often times alleviates or lessons many of the PMS symptoms such as cramping, moodiness, water gain, etc.

It seems to be a biological mechanism that was most likely tied evoloutionarily into the tides (and thus the moon cycles).

Probably, but 28 Days is just the estimated, average values of the menstrual cycle. There are always other factors affecting it such as stress, malnutrition, emotional distress... giving rise to the pms. =]

It's also interesting that if women stay together for long periods of time, their menstrual cycles will synchronize.
